    Bundle Description

    In this activity, students will use their proofreading skills to edit paragraphs about ten science and social studies skills. Skills practiced include punctuation, homophones, grammar, and commonly misspelled words. Each skill has a week's worth of activities, for a total of 50 paragraphs to edit!

    I use these as daily writing practice. The students complete a passage each day during morning work. On Fridays, we go over the possible answers. They could also be used during literacy centers or whole-group writing instruction.

    These paragraphs are leveled for use in a fourth grade classroom, but could easily be used in higher or lower grades as well. They are appropriate for all ages. They help students develop the CCSS Standard L.4.1 and L.4.2 and are an easy way to incorporate science into an ELA lesson.

    There are two main options for using these paragraphs in your classroom:

    ☮ Have students use the attached chart (or one of your own) to edit the paragraphs directly on the sheet – one per day.

    ☮ Use the second set of sheets to have students practice rewriting the whole paragraph – again, one per day.

    You could also project either sheet (save paper!) and have students rewrite the paragraph.

    Differentiation: On the answer key, I have provided the number of errors that are (purposely!) in the paragraph. Some students may choose to rewrite contractions, use optional commas, or make other stylistic changes – it’s up to you on those ones. You can choose to provide your students with that number – or not. Please note: I counted each error separately, including periods and capital letters.
