I designed these pages of task cards for my own class to use as daily problem solving practice. Many of the problems come from the Problem of the Day section of the Third Grade Envision Math series, by Pearson and some are problems that I created to complement the math series. You will see that many of the problems are parallel tasks problems that have a “partner” problem that is similar in theme but asks the students to look at the problem differently or offers an additional challenge for students that need it. I print two sets of problems per day and have the students glue them into a problem solving journal (composition notebook). I require that they draw pictures, use diagrams, and write about how they solved at least one of the problems. I then have them share their thinking with the other students in their cooperative teams. Finally I have a few students put their journal under the document camera and explain to the class how they went about solving the problem. By the end of the process all students will have recorded their thinking for both of the daily problems. I collect the journals once a week for a grade.
