This pack includes 11 different activities that are aligned with the common core standards to be used during Daily 5 word work time. These activities can be put out for the entire month for students to choose or several different activities each week. Many of the activities can be used by students individually and all are ready to be used in cooperative groups.


Rhyming – Rhyming word memory game. Students draw two cards and if they rhyme they keep the match. Students also can record their rhyming matches and come up with one more word that rhymes. (RF.K.2a)

Syllables – Students can practice segmenting words by syllables through a space themed game. Students will draw a card and clap out how many syllables are in the word and them move forward that many spaces. Each card has a picture and the word printed on it. When the game is complete, students can sort and record their words by syllables. (RF.K.2b)

Onset/rime – Students will create a flip book of words and pictures in the “ug” family (RF.K.2c)

CCVC words - Students will create a book of CCVC words. They will be given the pictures and will glue in their book template and stretch out the sounds to write the CCVC words (RF.K. 2d)

Add/ substitute individual sounds to create new words – Students will combine flowers with letters (onset) with rimes on flower pot to create words. They will record their work on a recording sheet (RF.K.2e)

Long vowel sounds – Students will use letter stamps to change CVC words into CVCe words on a recording sheet (RF.K.3b)

Long vowel sounds – Students will build words with long vowels sounds (“ee”, “ea,” “ai,” ). Students will use letter tiles with this activity to build words on a letter mat. Each letter mat has a picture that students can use as a starting point. Students can then record their answers on a recording sheet. (RF.K.3b)

Sort vowel sounds – Students will sort pictures by the middle vowel sounds. Pictures are in black and white as well as color. (RF.K.3b)

High Frequencey Words/Sight words – Two different activities with 4 or 5 different word sets for each 1.) Students will stamp with letter stamps and rainbow write the sight words 2.) students will use dice and write one of the sight words for each number on the dice. (RF.K.3c)

High Frequencey Words/Sight words – ARRRRG! Dolch sight word game. All words on the Dolch list are included in this game (pre-primer through 3rd grade). Students will draw a card and read the sight word. Play continues until a student draws an “ARRRG card” and then all the student’s cards go back into the pot. After a pre-determined set of time the student with the most cards wins. (RF.K.3c)
