Do you want to incorporate more daily writing into your day but don’t have a lot of time? Do you want your students to memorize the format of an essay without them shutting down? Try these templates! I have used these templates with struggling writers in 1-12th grade to not only teach them what to write in an Introduction, Body and Conclusion but to have them memorize the format.
The way it works…
These templates are based on the “4-Square Writing Method” by Judith and Evan Jay Gould.
The idea is that students will be writing 5 sentence paragraphs (at first) and then 3-5 paragraph essays as they improve- all without realizing they are writing an essay. Here how I use it in the classroom….
On Monday I give my students a template and a question (writing prompt) and each day for homework (or classwork) they do ONLY 1 box of the “5-square” template (10 minute assignment), adding to their initial response to the question (writing prompt). By Friday they have all 5 boxes complete and have either a 5 sentence paragraph (lower writing levels) or the makings of a 3-5 paragraph essay. (higher writing level)- All without realizing they have written the “E” word! They think they have just filled in a worksheet. After they have completed this template multiple times, the format and transition words become memorized and they know by memory how to format a paragraph/essay.
Great for 1st-12th graders (any student who struggles with writing an organized paragraph/essay)!
