This goes along with the spelling words for the Scott Foresman Reading street adoption for 2013 First Grade.
It is often difficult to squeeze formal spelling lessons in the day when busy working on small group lessons and center activities for the 90 minute reading block. I have made these worksheet to help cover spelling. There are 6 worksheets for each of the 6 stories in unit one. So there are 36 different spelling sheets included in this pack to help your students get practice with the spelling words! There is even an alternative spelling test to cover different types of skills.
During the first weeks of school I spend some time going over each of these papers with the students. These are good filler lessons while I spend the rest of the day "building stamina" and teaching center etiquette. I find that by the time I am ready to let them loose with centers during the 90 minute block and begin guided reading groups they are able to do all of these papers independently. Then the papers become independent morning work. Then I may spend about 10 or 15 minutes reviewing some of the papers(The abc order, and sentences in particular,) right before math centers in the afternoon when they are more "active". (They each have a table folder where they keep their morning work until I tell them to pull them out to go over together.) It is really nice to have them pull these out to go over when I need them to quiet down and get in work mode before I begin my math centers.
I find this to be good practice with spelling, handwriting, and building stamina for "big kid work." (I tell them that they are so smart that they get to do some work just like kids in high school and college do. (They think they are taking notes when we go over them...)They really eat this up and the 10-15 minutes I spend going over their answers before math centers in the afternoon gets them to be "serious" like a "high schooler" and college student. lol... it really works and they are getting spelling in to boot!
