Description

This lesson explores the various functions of dams and reservoirs, including irrigation, hydroelectric power generation, water supply, and flood control. The lesson also discusses the environmental and social costs associated with dams, including changing aquatic ecosystems, sedimentation, greenhouse gas emissions, evaporation, seismic activity, and population displacement. The lesson concludes with some suggestions for minimizing the negative impacts of dams and exploring alternative sources of energy.

In this environmental science lesson, students watch a short video, read an article, and then complete worksheets that prompt them to consider the impact of dams and reservoirs on the environment.
