Step by Step is a systematic programme which develops phonic ability from the 26 initial sounds, through blending a consonant and a vowel, consonant vowel consonant (cvc) words, final blends, initial blends and vowel blends. The first 500 words on Fry’s list of Common Words are included and each part can be used on an Interactive Smartboard. When working through the programme you can choose the regular pace or a slower pace by using the “b” booklets. The programme provides written practice at each level for Homework, Sentences & Pictures, simple cloze procedure and a Wordsearch. At levels 3, 4, 5, 6 and the Fry’s Lists the Jotter Sentences have also prepared so that the sheets can be placed in A5 ring binders developing in the more able children the skill of copying into a jotter. These practice tasks are deliberately repetitive because they are to be completed independently by young children. There is an explanation for parents at the front of every Homework Book but it is helpful to send out a short letter with the first book so that all parents actually follow the instructions as it is very important that the Homework is completed as directed. (a sample letter is included in the Support Materials folder) Keep the Phonic Word List to hand and use it to extend the knowledge of the children during the short 10 minute daily oral spelling lessons.
