In this download you will receive a 6 page investigation journal for the students, answer key, and an explanation of what is happening. The layout is very easy to follow.

This investigation could be used at the beginning of a unit on water as a way to get the students interested. It also works well at the end of a unit to test if the students can use their knowledge to figure out what is happening. In this investigation the learner will use the scientific method to investigate how salt affects ice. The students will test if the amount of salt will affect the ability of a piece of string to pick up an ice cube. They will identify the independent and dependent variables, write a hypothesis, follow procedures, record observations and data, create a graph, and write a summary. By the end of this investigation the students should understand that salt lowers the freezing point of ice.
The materials needed are:
cup or bowl
ice cubes
salt
string
water
timer

The students will also learn how to rank their observations and calculate the mode.

This investigation is great for a classroom, home school lesson, or a science fair project.
