Dar and the Spear-Thrower Reading Activities

The reading tasks in this resource consist of handouts to practice 12 different reading strategies and handouts with both comprehension and higher-level critical thinking questions about this story that is set in prehistoric Europe. The materials for each of the 22 chapters are organized in the same way: the reading strategies handout which lets your students practice 1 or 2 strategies specifically chosen for that chapter, a handout with 4 questions about the chapter, and a page that is the answer key to the questions.

While your students are reading Dar and the Spear-Thrower, the reading strategies handouts let them record how and where in the novel they are using each particular reading strategy. On the handouts with the questions, there are a variety of question types such as: what happened, that students can answer through recall or referring back to the text; explaining what a phrase or sentence in the text means; inferring what is going on or why a character behaved a certain way; offering an opinion about an event. Some questions ask students to use evidence from the text to support their answers. The questions were designed so that all your students, including English Language Learners at an intermediate level of language proficiency and higher, could answer at least one question as long as they can understand the story. The answer keys include responses for all the questions. If a question has more than one possible answer, suggested responses are provided to make it easier and faster for teachers to evaluate students' work.

In addition, there is a page that lists the reading strategies used in each chapter so you can see at a glance which reading strategies are used when. That list on that page includes brief definitions of each reading strategy in case you want to review them with students before they read each chapter. There is also one page listing the ELA Common Core anchor reading standards addressed by this product, for teachers who work in Common Core states. Lastly, there is a page that offers suggestions for reading the Afterword with students.
