Dar and the Spear-Thrower Vocabulary Activities

The vocabulary resources in this product include a list of 95 vocabulary words and definitions, templates for working with the words, directions and materials for playing 2 vocabulary games, and 6 word search and 6 crossword puzzles that incorporate all the target vocabulary words for this novel. The words on the vocabulary list also include their parts of speech and the page numbers on which they can be found in the book. All the word searches and crossword puzzles have accompanying answer keys. Students will definitely increase their vocabulary by using the materials in this product!

About half the vocabulary words in this product were selected by my students as words they wanted to learn when they were reading Dar and the Spear-Thrower. The other words are words that I thought were important and helpful for students to know. Students can use the templates to help them learn the vocabulary words by writing their own definitions or listing synonyms and antonyms, drawing pictures to illustrate the words, and using the words in sentences.

There are between 4 - 8 words for each chapter, with all but three chapters having 4 words. There are 2 templates for doing vocabulary work that are slightly different from each other; you can choose which one you prefer and use it as a model for students. A blank template is provided which you can photocopy for students or have students copy into their vocabulary journals.

In addition, complete instructions for playing Charades and Concentration (a matching game) are provided, along with the materials needed to play the games. There are 6 word search puzzles, with answer keys, that incorporate all the vocabulary words; each puzzle covers the vocabulary words in 3 or 4 chapters. There are also 6 crossword puzzles, with answer keys, that cover the same chapters as the word searches.

A table of contents makes it easy to find the various vocabulary resources. Another page at the beginning offers explanatory information for teachers and lists the ELA Common Core standards addressed by this product.

This resource will help your students better understand this wonderful story of a Cro-Magnon boy growing up in Ice Age France.
