This lesson has two parts: an article about Darwin's notebooks written on the HMS Beagle during it's voyage, and a notebook page hand-out where students can go outside and choose an organism to study just like Darwin did. I suggest that each student gets the two notebook sheets so that they can do a rough draft (field notes) outside and the other (study) to take home and finish it up nicely with color, pen and extra research just like Darwin did. You could also have students use this for researching a pond-water organism under the microscope. I have included examples of both "field notes" and "study" on the ladybug. Feel free to add, delete or change up the directions!
