This lesson has two parts: an article about Darwin's notebooks written on the HMS Beagle during it's voyage, and a notebook page hand-out where students can go outside and choose an organism to study just like Darwin did. I suggest that each student gets two notebook sheets so that they can do a rough draft outside and another to take home and finish it up nicely with color, pen and extra research just like Darwin did. You could also have students use this for researching a pond-water organism under the microscope. I have included an example of a rough draft possibility. Feel free to add, delete or change up the directions!
