Goals of Lesson:
1. Activate students’ prior knowledge of data analysis and statistics
2. Introduce essential questions
Where do statistics show up in our lives?
How do statistics impact our decisions?
How can statistics be helpful?
How can statistics be deceiving?
When hearing a new statistic,
what should we consider before believing that statistic to be true?
3. Encourage students to think critically about statistics
4. Engage students in mathematical discourse
This lesson has four parts:
: Students answer the “before the video” prompts related to what they already understand and wonder about data analysis and statistics.
: Students watch the short video “How statistics can lie” by Nathan Leslie at:
Video - How Statistics Can Lie
***The questions in this activity are broad and open ended so that this lesson can be paired with any introductory video on statistics
: Students respond to the “after the video” questions.
: Partner share or class discussion.
