This is a pen-free student-centered approach to data collection. Have you ever had one of those moments when you are doing discrete trials, or working on goals, and the pen is totally in your way? The student/client may try to write on the walls, your hands, themselves, your face, eat it… etc. :) Not to mention the need to have a hands on approach to errorless teaching using hand over hand prompting. Pens just get in the way! These strips are a great way to collect data without the pen. You just put the plus strip down when correct, or the minus strip up for incorrect. Repeat for each trial. When you are done with the trials you can easily copy that data onto a data sheet. These strips help with giving your students the undivided attention, prompting, and support they need without having to write data while working. I usually use a work/break approach with students, so when they are playing with their reinforcer, I can complete my paperwork. I make one set per student, and leave the strip attached to the data clipboard.
