Students usually have rich conversations about how they are doing their work, but they struggle with having to actually write it into complete sentences. This assessment (which can also be used as an activity) is meant to get students talking and writing. They must take a set of data and decide which measure of center to use to represent the data. Then they graph it and explain their reasoning behind the choices they made. Afterwards, they are required to analyze the data through the graphic representation they created. This is an open-ended assessment, which means that it requires deep thought and higher order thinking strategies.
