My greatest challenge with teaching students about graphing and data is helping them make real world connections. It’s easy to make a graph about things they’ve heard of before, but it’s tricky to demonstrate how they can use data outside of the classroom. I’m still working on refining my instruction in this area, but implementing this data and graphing project in my classroom has helped. My students get excited about graphing and data and start to make connections across multiple representations.
This freebie focuses on three data and graphing representations: frequency tables, tally charts, and dot plots. There are other representations, but they are not included in this product. The product includes pages for the student product and a rubric. This freebie is part of a larger product, my Data and Graphing Project. My full data project includes five data and graphing representations: frequency tables (regular talbe), tally charts, dot plots (line graph or line plot), bar graphs, and pictographs. It also includes a short quiz students can complete as part of the project, or as a separate assignment. You can purchase that product here.
Both this freebie and the larger project are aligned to the following standards:
Texas TEKS: 3.8A, 3.8B, 4.9A, and 4.9B
Common Core:3.MD.B.3, 4.MD.B.4
