Have you noticed that your students don't know how to conduct searches using online databases? It was a big issue at my school, when I noticed my students trying to type questions into the database search boxes, instead of using keywords, so I developed these fun activities to give them practice. You can simply print them off and use as worksheets for a center activity or very simple substitute plans OR you can use them as a game your students will be excited to play!
Since my students had so much fun with this game, I made different versions so that students in 3rd, 4th, & 5th grades could practice their database skills each year AND still have a different Database Detectives each time they play! I use the Planets Edition with my 4th graders and the U.S. Facts Edition with my 5th graders. I use my Animals Edition (sold separately) with my 3rd graders.
To use as a game, students are paired up and work together to answer questions to see who can successfully complete the Database Detectives cards first. Students will identify the keyword(s) or subject of the question to identify the correct search term. Then they will use those keywords to conduct searches on Britannica Online to find the answers to the questions on the Database Detectives game cards. Your students will be learning the beginning steps of conducting research, reading authentic expository texts to find information, becoming familiar with online educational databases, and working cooperatively without even realizing it. After all, they are just playing a game!
What you will get with this product:
* Two separate Database Detectives Using Britannica Online versions (Planets Edition & U.S. Facts Edition).
* Both include:
* Cover Sheet
* Instructions for using as a game
* Accommodation recommendations
* 15 question cards
* Answer key
When copied on cardstock & laminated, these activities will be ones you'll be happy to use year after year.
Before purchasing this 2 pack, make sure your students have access to computers with internet access and that you have a subscription to Britannica Online. I usually have one computer per every 2 students.
Make sure to check out my store for other great database resources and activities. I have more Database Detectives games for World Book available too. The Animals edition for World Book is different from the Britannica version, so if you'd like to purchase both and use them with your students, the questions won't overlap.
Your feedback is always appreciated. Thank you!
