Have you noticed that your students don't know how to conduct searches using online databases? It was a big issue at my school, when I noticed my students trying to type questions into the database search boxes, instead of using keywords, so I developed this fun activity to give them practice. You can simply print it off and use as a worksheet for a center activity or a very simple substitute plan OR you can use it as a game your students will be excited to play!
To use as a game, students are paired up and work together to answer questions to see who can successfully complete the Database Detectives cards first. Students will identify the keyword(s) or subject of the question to identify the correct search term. Then they will use those keywords to conduct searches on Britannica Online to find the answers to the questions on the Database Detectives game cards. Your students will be learning the beginning steps of conducting research, reading authentic expository texts to find information, becoming familiar with online educational databases, and working cooperatively without even realizing it. After all, they are just playing a game!
What you will get with this product:
* Cover Sheet
* Instructions for using as a game
* Accommodation recommendations
* 15 question cards
* Answer key
When copied onto cardstock & laminated, this activity will be one you'll be happy to use year after year. In fact, my students enjoyed playing it so much, and classroom teachers and I found it so beneficial to learning, I made 3 versions. At my school, I use this one with my 3rd graders. The Planets version with my 4th graders, and the U.S. Facts versions with the 5th graders. The 4th & 5th grade versions are available in a 2-pack in my TPT store. By having different versions, your students can play year after year, and you have a handy pre-made activity to reinforce database searching right at your finger tips!
Before purchasing this item, make sure your students have access to computers with internet access and that you have a subscription to Britannica Online. I usually have one computer per every 2 students.
Make sure to check out my store for other great database resources and activities. I have more Database Detectives games for World Book available too. The Animals edition for World Book is different from the Britannica version, so if you'd like to purchase both and use them with your students, the questions won't overlap.
Your feedback is always appreciated. Thank you!
