This Dating Profile Project is a fun way for students to demonstrate their understanding of a genre or as an introduction to the characters in a novel.
My favorite way to use this project is with my Gothic unit. I begin with a little speech about how we’ve been learning how isolated these characters are, so what better solution than for them to create a dating profile?
I have included a few other different styles of this product, as it can easily be applied to almost any unit. It would also go well with a Transcendentalist unit – students could create a profile for Thoreau, Emerson, Whitman, etc. Although these authors preferred to be on their own, I can still see their families saying, “When are you going to stop being a hermit and find yourself a nice girl?!” :)
This profile project could just as easily tie in with a novel study as well.
The attached rubric (customized for each version) has plenty of room for notes. I just check off the box that applies to their finished project and write a couple of comments.
I highly recommend that you have a gallery walk with all of the finished dating profiles so that the students can see each others’ work. I like to give each student a few sticky notes for this so that they can give feedback.
Good luck and please contact me if you have any questions or comments!
