Students with social language difficulties are more at risk for being in abusive or unhealthy dating relationships. They also may not understand the process of dating, which can make this social skill challenging for them to master. With this teaching guide, you will have everything you need to teach the foundational steps of this complex topic using a strategic approach.

  • Step 2- You "Ask Out" the Person: This reading passage explains how to ask out someone, and what to do if the person says no.

  • Step 3: You Become Boyfriend/Girlfriend: This page explains the process of becoming girlfriend/boyfriend and discusses signs of healthy/unhealthy dating relationships.

  • Step 4- You Break Up...or Stay Together: This reading passage explains how to know if you should stay in a relationship or break up. It also discusses each step you should take when breaking up with someone. There is an additional page on what to do when someone breaks up with you.
  • Step 4 Break Up Checklist: Discussion questions to ensure your student understands the break up process.
  • Step 5- Be Patient and Keep Trying: A reminder that dating can be a frustrating process, but to stay patient with the process.
  • Scenarios: Help your students identify the best course of action for each pretend dating situation.
  • Act It Out- Students pretend they are in a specific dating situation and must determine what they would say or do.
