About David Livingstone

David Livingstone was born into a very poor family in Glasgow, UK in 1813. There were 7 children in his family, and he had to go to work in the local cotton mill at an early age to help support the family. In the cotton mill, he worked 14 grueling hours, mending the broken threads in the huge weaving machines. Afterwards, he would go to school for another 2 hours each day. These long hours at a young age instilled in David a stubborn will and fierce discipline that would serve him well in later years.

David was very intelligent, and he went to college to pursue missionary studies and medical training. David wanted to be a missionary, and he hoped that a degree in medicine would help him spread the Gospel and help heal people where they needed it most. He desired to go to China but the First Opium War (a war between the UK and China over trading) hit that region, and he was prevented from going there. Shortly afterwards, however, David met Robert Moffat, a famous Scottish missionary in South Africa, and Robert convinced David to switch his missionary focus to South Africa. There are several ways you could use this download to teach your kids about David Livingstone.

First, you can do it as a group activity. Have the children sit in a teaching circle and show them the picture of David Livingstone. As you show them the picture, you can read the story of his life, which will be printed on the backside of the picture. Discuss the questions as a group. A PowerPoint is also included as a way to tell his story.

The other way to use this product is as an individual assignment. Kids will read the passage on their own and answer the questions.

I always start my Sunday School lessons with a "Missionary Minute." We listen to a story about a missionary like David Livingstone or others, like Amy Carmichael or Hudson Taylor, and find the places they served on a map. Then we pray for the needs of missionaries around the world. It is so impacting to these Sunday School learners!
