Introduce students to the impact of westward expansion on the Great Plains and the Native Americans. Also introduce the definition of the Dawes Act and why the US supported assimilation. After students are introduced to the key ideas have students complete a variety of primary sources to learn about the impact of the Dawes Act on Native Americans. Finally, have students discuss the essential question: Should the United States have repealed or supported the Dawes Severalty Act of 1887 in the best interest of the American Indians living in the Great Plains region of the United States?
