Supporting Indigenous Literature in the Classroom
*This Unit is featured in my blog: infusingindigenouslit.com
This reading response unit based on the story, Dawn Flight, written by Kevin Locke and illustrated by Jessika Von Innerebner is the perfect unit to use at the beginning of the class year to highlight virtues. Within this unit, students will examine the 'virtues' mentioned in eagle's teachings within the story. As well, students will be able to use reading strategies: Meaning, Visualization, Compare and Contrast and Connection to better understand the story.
Also included is an activity to help students create their own, Eagle's Teachings,
mini-book or classroom book.
This unit is developed to support a single read aloud copy. There is zero prep needed (other than photocopying) and has 8 different activities to support the story.
This unit supports the following BC Curriculum Language Arts 'Big Ideas':
The activity sheets that support this unit are perfect for students between Grade 1 and Grade 3 and could be used to guide discussions for kindergartens.
