Thank you very much for considering this World Civilizations unit the Dawn of Civilization and Greek Civilization!
You are considering a 11-14 class day (1 hour per class) unit that is completely customizable. It consists of Word and and PowerPoint files that you can easily adjust to your needs. It is not flashy and colorful, just substantive, best practice driven, instruction and activities.
What you will find inside are daily folders labeled in the sequence that I would suggest using them. In each folder you will find all the materials needed for each lesson. The only exception to this is videos that are linked into the materials and easily accessible on Youtube. In every folder you will also find a daily PowerPoint which has an activator, agenda, objective, wrap up, interesting images, etc that bear on topic. Additionally each folder contains daily directions for a suggestion on how to run each activity.
Scope and Sequence:
This is the first unit in a Western Civilization course that spans from Greece to the Enlightenment. This unit is self contained and does not need to be part of a course with this focus on Western Civilization. This unit is organized around the following Western values: Reason, Individualism, Happiness, Rights, and Capitalism. We will also engage with how the East and West have interacted in key moments. The unit starts with how civilizations form and what culture is. It then defines Western culture and values and starts to trace how they developed through Greek Civilization.
This unit requires:
-Access to the internet for research, videos, etc.
-Youtube: there are multiple clips that are used throughout the unit.
This unit covers the following topics:
-Origins of Humanity
-What is Civilization?
-What is Culture?
-A Comparison of Greece and China
-Early Greek Civilization
-The Founding of Democracy
-The Function of Greek gods and Religion
-Greek Golden Age
-Greek Clash with the East
-Greek Philosophy and Philosophers
-The Fall of Greek Civilization
Students will engage in a wide range of activities from competing in a simulation to jigsaw’s, class discussions, analyzing written sources and documentaries, etc.
This source is included in the Entire Western Civilization Semester Course (Prehistory-1700, 90 Days) bundle.
Thank you again for your consideration!
