This cultural unit on the "Altar of Muertos" is the perfect background to practice and review food items. Explain to students that the Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday that occurs between November 1-2 . The people who celebrate crete "Altares de Muerto" which are nothing that improvised altars using a regular table against a wall.
You will go over the basic elements of an "Altar de Muertos". distributing the worksheet to the class. Explain to them altars are built to honor people who are no longer with us. Families spend lots of time buying the best copal, best candles, calaveras and all the items to honor their departed ones in style.
When you mention food you will let them know they will be creating a menu for items that will go on the altar. They can pick items for someone who they want to honor or general items they think will be good in the altar.
Distribute the food vocabulary worksheets. Go over each item.
Give them the Altar de muertos worksheet have them fill out a complete menu for breakfast, lunch, dinenr, dessert, beverages , favorite foods.
Once they finish , they can read a section of their paper. Great listening comprehension activity for the class, and for the student a reading and writing grade.
Finally have them work on the Double Puzzle whose answer is "Altar de Muertos"
