This is a ready to go project for Day of the Dead! For this project, the students create an ofrenda for either someone they know who has died or for a celebrity/historical figure who has passed away. The directions are in English. There are many ways that this project can be used. As it appears in this project, students use computers and then the internet to find pictures of items/foods that were cherished by the person who died. They digitally cut and paste the items into the ofrenda template. There is a template of a paper ofrenda (this is not 3D). The project's directions are comprehensive, requirements are listed, there is an easily-modified rubric, and there is also an example using Elvis Presley. Another way this can be modified is for the teacher to give the students an actual print-out for the ofrenda template and they can print out pictures and actually glue them onto the ofrenda. I prefer digital because there is less mess. The last option is that you can have the students put the ofrenda template onto a powerpoint and make a powerpoint with the ofrenda template on the first slide (with all pictures digitally cut and pasted into that slide) and then each slide following has one picture for the first slide and an explanation of why it's on the ofrenda. For example: one slide would have a peanut butter and banana sandwich picture and below it, the student would write "Elvis loved PB and banana sandwiches." My kids LOVED this project so I wanted to share it. Make sure you have your google/search engine filters set to "safety strict" and keep a close eye on your students as they google search for images.
