Description

This engaging Day of the Dead, or Día de los muertos, lesson includes a reading comprehension passage about the holiday and directions and materials to create a 3D hanging calavera (skull) craft. English and Spanish versions of the reading passage, answer key, craft directions, and scoring rubric are included.

Reading Passage - The reading passage explains that Day of the Dead is a holiday celebrated in Mexico. On this holiday, people believe the spirits of their loved ones who have died can return to be with the living for a short time. The passage goes on to explain how people celebrate Day of the Dead, including costumes, parades, music, dancing, eating sugar skull candy, and setting up ofrendas (altars) in their homes full of their loved one's favorite foods.

3D Calavera Craft - This download includes directions (in English and Spanish), four pre-decorated calaveras (skulls) to color, and 2 blank calavera templates (so students can design their own if prefered). Students color and assemble a 3D hanging calavera decoration in honor of Day of the Dead.

Bonus Craft - The skull templates included can also be used to create a calavera mask like those worn on Day of the Dead in Mexico. Just color, cut out the eyes, and attach a skewer or chopstick to the back to serve as a handle!
