I have been doing some deep thinking of ways to support teachers who are going to have to figure out how to teach online during the coronavirus pandemic of 2020. There is a serious situation going on and there is a lot of fear. I wanted to figure out a way to make learning fun and lighten the atmosphere a little with an activity you could do with your students over online meetings.

I realized that we see reality tv judges and other personalities with their sponsored coffee mugs or other soda bottles with brands on them and it dawned on me! When you go live on video, everyone is always wondering: what is in her cup she is drinking, what does it say on the mug (if the words are too small to see), what is on his/her shirt, etc etc. What if we made this into a learning possibility? Students could decorate their water bottle to illustrate a particular topic that they learned that day (or that week, you could even do this as a Friday fun thing, ongoing assignment).

Teacher Instructions:

1. Make a list of concepts from that unit or week or day, depending on your time frame and content you want to focus on. For a class of 30 students, you’ll need around 10 different concepts.

1. Send students their PDF over Google Classroom (or your school’s LMS).

You can save it to your drive and then share to theirs.

2. Let them know the specific topic you want each of them to illustrate on their bottle! You could assign 3-4 students the same topic or concept so that they can compare and “compete” at the next class.

3. At the next class, spend a few minutes and let each students show off their bottle and explain what they drew!

4. Depending on your class culture and student personalities, you could have a competition, or just do this for fun.
