Dazzling Dialogue is a fun way to teach grammar to your students! Teaching students how to punctuate dialogue correctly is difficult. Students have a hard time remembering the rules for punctuating dialogue, so I invented a simple mnemonic device to help: COD PIN.
Here is what each of the letters in COD PIN stands for…
C: Capital letter starts the quote
O: Open & close quotation marks
D: Dialogue verb
P: Punctuation before (sometimes) and at end (always)
N: New paragraph each time
Remembering COD PIN helps students learn and remember a
simple method for consistently punctuating dialogue correctly.
This packet is great for 4th-6th graders. It is a great tool to use with 3rd graders at the end of the school year, but it would require more support from an adult at the 3rd grade level.
