Alexis de Tocqueville wrote one of the most insightful books on American society after his travels through the USA in 1831. Amazingly his observations are hauntingly descriptive of today's America in many situations. This 430 word passage defines Popular Sovereignty as he saw it playing out. He also wrote on the Federalists and Republicans (Democratic Republicans) and their distinctions. This portion of the passage sets up well for a Venn Diagram or Double Bubble Thinking Map if you are familiar with those organizers. I think you will find this passage insightful and succinct for use in your classroom study of these topics.
I also included some suggested activities and questions that will require your students to think and be creative.
