This packet is designed for heritage Spanish speakers or relatively advanced Spanish students. I used the full novel with my first-year Spanish language arts students (mixed grades 9/10, no previous Spanish class). If you're thinking about the whole novel, consider this resource: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Cajas-de-carton-Comprehension-and-Analysis-Questions-and-Additional-Resources-3975293.
This particular chapter, I used with my mixed grade (7/8) junior high class, who I only saw for one quarter of the academic year. My classes had significant variation in reading and writing proficiency, though all students were fluent listeners and speakers of Spanish. For some, this chapter was a total breeze while for others, it was quite challenging.
I introduced this chapter at the end of the quarter after diving into basic literacy skills and reinforcing reading and writing techniques associated with their English language arts classes. Additionally, I introduced the book after watching a documentary called "La Cosecha" that addresses youth as migrant laborers in the United States (2010). I will be adding materials related to the documentary, so look for that in my store in the coming weeks! Before digging into the analysis questions here, we really focused on basic comprehension of the chapter, using text citations to support our answers. That, at least, helped to get students on the same page in understanding the chapter!
The packet includes some comprehension, but primarily analysis questions for the chapter. This is NOT a packet focused on vocabulary or basic language acquisition but rather on developing critical skills for effective literary thinking and writing! These could be assigned as independent, in-class guided reading or homework and used as the basis for in-class discussion.
In addition to the questions, you'll find a page of additional resources for students to explore in order to better understand the text and a graphic organizer for students to visualize the overarching metaphor in this chapter. Both the question page and the graphic organizer are included in blank, ready-to-use forms and teacher forms (answer keys!).
