This unit works well with classroom discussion groups, and it can be used as an independent study. The humor, history, and unique style in this 2012 Newbery Award winning novel captures and holds the students' attention.
The novel study unit is divided into two sections. The first part includes ten lessons, a vocabulary study guide, and a test. The second part includes nine lessons, a vocabulary study guide, and a test. Each lesson starts with vocabulary words, parts of speech, and definitions so the students can build their vocabulary. Next, varied questions challenge the readers to analyze the novel before writing thorough responses. The student responses lead to in depth discussions. The study guide requires the students to use context clues as they write sentences that relate to the novel. Each test includes vocabulary, character quotes, multiple choice questions, true/false statements, and an essay response. Answer keys are included.
