This is a packet which walks students through a report (including citing bibliographic sources) on a (dead) president of their choice. I've found that letting them do reports on presidents that are alive tend to bring up polarizing politics (for example, Bush and Obama) and that there are more sources for the older presidents in our history.
The packet includes several places for due dates--a date for choosing a president and finding the basic birth and death dates, a date for the first paragraph to be done, etc. After each, I have them turn it in and review their work to make sure that they are on track and don't leave it all to the last minute. The packet also includes a rubric adding up to 100 points for easy grading.
