While teaching students to incorporate stronger word choice into their writing, we conduct a Dead Words Funeral. We work on thesaurus and dictionary strategies while discovering more interesting synonyms for dull words commonly found in our writing.
Included are 30 different words to use for this activity. After the lesson, I display the "tombstones" around the classroom as a living word wall that everyone has access to. We have also had a funeral procession to other classrooms to show off our newfound synonyms and mourn the demise of our dull words!
