Product Description
Dealing with burping is usually very easy to explain to kids. We typically tell them that it is bad manners and ask them to say, “excuse me”. For some young children, it is difficult to understand what ‘manners’ are. And others may have a habit of burping or do it to gain attention from others. In those cases, it is easier to explain an alternate, more acceptable behavior. In the case of a chronic burper, you may want to contact
the parent in order to rule out any medical reasons. This social story explains what burping is and stresses that it makes many people feel uncomfortable. It describes burping as best done in private and if that is not possible, how to make it less ‘offensive’. Finally at the end it goes into several things that the attention
seeker may do in place of burping for attention. If you have one of those students, try asking him to choose one of the new behaviors and implement it. It will probably take some time, and you may even have to ’catch him in the act’ and make him practice the new behavior in place of it. Remember changing behaviors that have been in place for some time takes lots of patience and purposeful re-training. I always find ignoring minor burping best, doing some education about the behavior (reading this social story many times) and rewarding the positive behavior (using alternative behaviors) the most effective method of decreasing burping.
