This novel unit is designed to go along with your Social Studies lessons on the Underground Railroad and Westward Expansion (early 1850’s). This unit does not give you lessons on the Underground Railroad, but rather reading lessons on the novel, Dear Austin, a book of letters from Levi to his brother Austin, who had moved out to Oregon in 1851. Levi is waiting to be able to travel out west to be with his brother on their family’s claim. This story tells about his adventures and the impact the Underground Railroad has on those closest to him. There are activities to support the reading, along with comprehension questions from each section.
There are 9 teaching days with lesson outlines, vocabulary words, and activities. At the end of the novel, review key items before assessing the novel with the unit test, which is at the end of this packet. It will cover the vocabulary as well as content of the novel.
