This letter to families gives ideas to help student understand measurement and volume. The letter explains opportunities for working with volume at home. Providing families with numerous experiences with volume, comparing, and measuring with standard units.
Starting with their own set of measuring cups and spoons gives ideas to:
• Help a young child see two ½ cups fill one cup, four 1/4 cups fill that same one cup.
• Give them a plastic bowls, juice containers, and serving containers and have them guess how many cups it will take to fill the containers, then experiment filling them.
The more experience they have with various containers the quicker they will develop their intuitive understanding of volume.
