Integrating novel units into your social studies block can transform history for your students. "Dear Levi" is a story of a young boy moving west to work the land his Pa claimed for their family. The hardships of moving west in a wagon train are beyond what we can imagine, but this novel brings so many of those aspects to life for the reader. Your students will look forward to reading what happens next to Austin as he faces challenges he's never known before. This novel integrates perfectly for Westward Expansion portion of your curriculum.
Included in this novel unit you have a vocabulary sheet that highlights key vocabulary, asks students to watch of how it's used in the novel, and a few questions dealing with predictions, summarizing, or story elements. After reading a chunk of the novel, students will answer comprehension questions, and complete a fun activity to go along with that portion of the story. Activities include "Pack Your Wagon" where students decide what to bring on their 5 month journey across the country, and "My Character is a Star" where students decide on 5 adjectives that describe their favorite character, and write why they chose those particular descriptive words. There is also a story map and additional journal / writing prompt / discussion questions that can be used throughout the novel. The entire packet culminates with a unit assessment. Answers keys are provided.
