One of my favorite books to read with my class each year is Dear Mr. Henshaw by Beverly Cleary. This text provides a ton of teachable moments, as well as an opportunity to get to know your students.
After reading the text, students complete 10 writing responses to Mr. Henshaw just like the main character Leigh. This writing activity allows you to see what kinds of writers/workers you have, gives you a glimpse of their personalities, and a sneak peek at their personal lives. After they complete the writings we compile the responses in to a mini-book with a cover. The responses make an excellent addition to their portfolios and are great samples to share during conferences.
This packet includes prompt response pages with room for drawings and personalization. Also included is a graphic organizer that can be used with any fiction text, a Dear Mr. Henshaw foldable, mentor text response sheet where students can select a sentence from the text to analyze. A rubric has also been included to provide feedback to students in regards to their writing.
This is certainly one of my favorite activities and I look forward to learning more about my students each year as I read about them.
