Product Description
Dear Principal, Give me a day … is a fun, persuasive writing activity that the students will love. Students will write a persuasive letter to their principals to persuade him or her to let them have a chance to be principal for a day. They will explain why they are a perfect candidate, give ideas about what they can do for the day, and end the letter with what it will teach them about leadership. This letter is meant to be a fun, fictional letter, but if you wish to share them with your principal, perhaps he or she would be persuaded enough to actually choose a principal for the day from the writing.

This resource can be used to teach persuasive letter writing – taking students through the whole writing process from generating ideas all the way to publishing final drafts. It can also be completed as part of a writer’s workshop, writing center, or guided writing group. This assignment can be completed in one week – Day 1: Ideas, Day 2: Organization, Day 3: Voice and Word Choice, Day 4: Sentence Fluency and Rough Draft, Day 5: Conventions and Good Draft Publishing.

Their letters will contain three different parts:
- Introduction paragraph briefly explaining why they would be a great candidate to be principal for the day,
- Body paragraph detailing the students’ ideas about what they will do in the day,
- Conclusion paragraph stating what skills they will learn; how it will benefit them.

This assignment takes students through the 6 (+1) traits of writing (from pre-writing all the way to the published good copy).

Completed letters will make a great bulletin board display using the title: “Dear Principal, Give Me a Day …”.

I am including a completed letter that you can use with students to get their creative juices flowing, or to provide a little extra guided help for students who require more scaffolding or differentiation.

A rubric is also included for assessment.
