Active learning vocabulary task based on the novel by Eugene McCabe. The puzzle contains 27 words. All are important or key words from the text with which students should be familiar for discussion and analysis of it.
Words are ..bishop, blackmail, bog, canon, Catholic, deception, drunk, dynamite, elope, Fenian, grave, incest, informer, inherit, landlord, misbegotten, miscegenation, nationalist, poison, prejudice, Protestant, quarry, secret, tenant, tribe, unionist, and will.
Although students often see the puzzle format as a fun task, this is deceptive. It is an active learning activity that gets them thinking about words (and their meaning in the novel).
This is the type of activity that you could use with early finishers, or give to a sub teacher, or use as a filler on a day when you have nothing else prepared. You could use it to check on students' understanding of key words.
A word bank is supplied to support students. You could redact this to make the puzzle more challenging.
The solution is included. Download the preview file to see the grid and the solution.
