During the Presidential Election, students may be wondering about the debates. Many elementary age students may not have heard the term before. Although their opportunity to vote in a national election, and even to participate on a debate team or enter a forensics competition, may be far in the future, this resource will provide an age-appropriate introduction to debating. The 24 task cards provide some topics of interest to third through sixth graders. Blank task cards are also included for you to add more topics of particular interest to your class. The 24 additional teacher cards will help you to guide students through the first two activities and also to scaffold your discussion on each topic, The three statements go from general to more specific on each topic.
Some suggested ways to use these cards are included in the Teacher Notes. You might also be interested in this blog post: http://rainbowcitylearning.blogspot.com/2016/09/stand-for-something.html. Writing the post inspired me to create this resource! And to think it all started with a song!
