These plans use Henry and Mudge as the starting point for a debate. The students also watch videos about mastiffs to answer the question, Would a mastiff mate a good pet?. Each day the children will turn and talk during the video aloud or read aloud and are allowed to change their opinions. Each day they participate in a mini-debate based on the work of that day. The last lesson is the large debate. The students meet with like minded students and plan their debate and then during the debate they are adding thinking to their work. After the debate is complete, the students go back and write long off their opinion now that they have more information from the debate. This includes a text set with literary, informational, and video. The teacher could also add in internet sources on pets that could extend the lessons.
