I love using debates in my classes. It's a great way for students to practice communicating in a respectful and safe manner AND, it's fun! I found that my students this year didn't know the steps involved in a formal (introductory) debate, and since I'm a visual learner, I decided to make them a PowerPoint presentation with the step-by-step explanation.
Included with this package is my PowerPoint presentation, the debating KWL charts (a sample copy as well as a student version), the debating Brainstorming sheet (a sample copy as well as a student copy), a "cheat sheet" with the overview of the debate order of presentation, a debating Roles sheet where students can write their own overview, and finally, the Rubric I use to take notes during the debates so that I can remember who participated and what their contributions were.
I hope you enjoy doing in-class debates as much as I do!
