December morning math builds and expands student knowledge from the previous months. Students will work to develop a deeper understanding of numbers to 120. Number order, value of specific digits, extending the counting sequence, along with representing numbers using tens and ones is reviewed and practiced during the December module. Students have opportunities to graph data, and analyze/interpret data using picture graphs and bar graphs. Problem solving and associated number talks are also facilitated frequently with multiple problems per week.
Similar to previous months, students will be measuring items using rulers that will be printed and cut out for each lesson limiting preparation required by the classroom teacher. Students also begin to look at number bonds and making friendly numbers to support computation.
Implementation within the classroom is as easy as printing off the Smartboard slides for the days lesson (we use 4 slides per day - 2 per page copied front to back). Students enter the classroom in the morning and complete work independently as a seat work job. Students then review, discuss, share answers and how they arrived at an answer during the teacher directed review of material. (Typically 10-15 minutes whole group.)
