Fill your literacy or language area with these fun, festive, activities during the month of December. Through repetition, your students will be learning their sight words, reading sentences, and drawing their own picture clues! There are 8 sight word sentences (same throughout each activity) which are traffic light style.

What is traffic light style?

Great question! Traffic light style is when there are red, yellow, and green dots under each word in each sentence.

Why use them?

Glad you asked! Not only are the dots great for one-to-one correspondence, but they also show a child where to start, where to read slowly, and where to stop. It also helps to get the children used to using them, before introducing them to cut-up/mixed up sentences. The traffic light dots are so helpful to the child when they begin doing cut-up/mixed up sentences!

What's Included:

  • 8 Sight Word Sentence Strips
  • 8 Cut-up/Mixed up Sentences
  • Read and Draw booklets for all 8 sentences

How to use Sight Word Sentence Strips:

  1. Download template
  2. Print all pages
  3. Cut on lines to separate sentences, as well as pictures
  4. Glue sentences and pictures to heavy duty paper, like card-stock (see tip below)
  5. Laminate all pieces
  6. Instruct children to read the sentence and match it to the corresponding picture

How to use Cut-up Sentences:

  1. Download template
  2. Print all pages
  3. Cut on lines to separate words, as well as pictures
  4. Glue sentences and pictures to heavy duty paper, like card-stock (see tip below)
  5. Laminate all pieces
  6. Instruct children to begin with words that have green dot
  7. Instruct child to end the sentence with words that have red dots
  8. Instruct child to organize yellow dots so that the sentence makes sense

Tips:

  • If 8 full sentences is too much for your students, break it up into 2 works consisting of 4 sentences each
  • Glue sentences and pictures to corresponding colored card-stock before laminating
  • After matching all sentences, have them pick their favorite and write it on paper with a pencil

How to use Read and Draw Booklets:

  1. Download template
  2. Print all pages
  3. Instruct child to read each sentence and draw the corresponding picture
  4. When they are all done with each sentence, cut each rectangle and staple together to form book.

Tips:

  • Have child make a front and back cover of their own creation!

Enjoy!
