This product is a collection of 5 different CGI (Cognitively Guided Instruction) math word problems for December. The themes of the problems are Christmas, Hanukkah, Snowmen, The Polar Express, and The Grinch. Each problem has a selection of numbers for you and your students to choose from so that the problem becomes appropriate for their learning level. The problem types include multi-step problems, single step problems, grouping or multiplication, subtraction (separate result unknown), and comparing problems.

The themes are fun and engaging for students so that they will become interested in solving the problems. These problems and numbers allow for a variety of solution strategies that can be shared with the class. This will result in rich math talk and discussion in your classroom. Students can ask questions and justify their thinking which along with the objective of problem solving meets the Common Core Standards.

The problems are formatted in tables, so that you can print as many pages as you need, cut them apart, and students can glue them in their math notebooks or problem solving journals. I also glue one in my lesson plan book so I can keep track of the problems we have solved. This product is designed for grades 1-5 because of the variety of numbers to choose from in parenthesis after each problem.

These CGI problems will help your students develop a deeper conceptual understanding of mathematical concepts while having a little fun in the process! Enjoy!
