Here's a library center for 3rd, 4th, an 5th grade students. The resource contains a few simple activities for students to work on independently in a library center after they read the featured book. (The book is not included. :) One activity involves a template (in color and in black/white) for writing a Christmas thank you letter to an active member of our Armed Forces, or to a veteran. Another is a word search with military- and Christmas-themed words from the story. Within the resource, three other books are described that would be great choices to include in this center. There is also a website listed for students to explore while learning more about NORAD's "Santa Tracking" service on Christmas Eve. This website has information about how Santa is tracked as well as video clips and games about the military's NORAD program.

Background Information: Did you know that every Christmas Eve, an estimated 6000 kids and adults (per hour!) track Santa on the “NORAD Santa Tracker?" Over 1,500 American and Canadian military volunteers man the phones each Christmas Eve to answer questions from curious children who call 1-877-HiNorad.

(FYI -- NORAD stands for North American Aerospace Defense Command.” The letters don't match the acronym but that's what it stands for today. They changed the name years ago, but decided to keep the same acronym.)

In the featured book, NORAD is busy tracking Santa, as always, to make sure no harm comes his way. Suddenly, everyone is startled to discover that Santa has disappeared from the radar screen! Quickly, all hands are on deck as soldiers scramble to find Santa and save Christmas!
