December Sight Word Stories
Throughout the year, I find myself wanting my students to continue practicing their sight words with something that challenges them a little more than just a flash card. So, I have created stories that include 10 sight words numerous times throughout the story/text. Some of the stories are fiction, while others are non-fiction. The stories are something I use with my students who excel in reading. This could also be used in second grade to practice fluency.

The students start by reading the story (timed or untimed, depending on your preference.) They then re-read the story and underline the sight words that are listed on the side of the page. There is also a color written next to each sight word, and a number. This will help the students keep track of how many of a certain word they have found, and a total amount of that word they should find. The students will most likely re-read the story a few times to find all the sight words, so they are getting lots of fluency practice in too. I tell my students to read looking for one sight word, then read again looking for the next sight word on the list, and repeat this until they have found all the sight words on the list.

When I did this with my class, I printed enough copies for everyone. The students worked in partners and took turns reading the passage and helped each other find the words. Even my students who were below grade level were able to find the sight words and work through the passage with the help of a stronger reader as their partner. This way your strong readers are challenged with the reading and your struggling readers are getting in sight word practice to become stronger readers.

Once the students have read through the passage and found all the sight words, you can use the comprehension pages. I usually copy this on the back of the passage. This will get your students re-reading and looking for text evidence to support their answers.

-20 passages-10 fiction, 10 non-fiction (Each passage includes numbers on the side to use it for timed reads. It also includes 10-12 sight words for the students to find. This sight words appear anywhere from once to numerous times.)
-20 Answer Keys to show you where the Sight Words the students should have underlined are
-20 pages of Comprehension questions, 4 per selection, 1 page per passage
-20 pages of Comprehension question answer keys
