Can you imagine what Santa was like as a baby? Well, Linda Bailey and Genevieve Godbout wrote the book! And it is hilarious. Your kids will LOVE this book. This comical picture book describes the tall tale of Santa Claus as a baby and all the hyperboles you can imagine that go along with it. This picture book inspired my 4th graders to imagine what Rudolph and Frosty were like as a baby and also…what really happens at Santa's workshop?

This is a fantastic and festive way to keep your kids writing, reading, and learning before winter break. I am all about keeping things super fun, but super simple around this time of year when things seem almost as crazy as the beginning of the year. We typically have midyear assessments the last couple of weeks before winter break, so this fun writing activity was a nice way to tap into their creative writing skills.

Even though this activity is a wonderful way to write after reading the book When Santa Was a Baby by Linda Bailey and Genevieve Godbout, students can still imagine what it would be like when the classic characters Rudolph and Frosty were little ones, as well as what really happens at Santa's workshop- even if you haven't read the book. After reading the book, I gave students a choice on which character they wanted to write about. After they finished one character, depending on time, many students wanted to write about another.

In the Reindeer Comic Strip, students imagine how the reindeers learn how to fly. The students fill in the missing parts, including thoughts and dialogue.

Happy Writing!
Jessica
