### PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

How I use this resource in my classroom:
This aligns with
• Go Math! Chapter 3 Lesson 3.5 and 3.6
• CC.5.NBT.7 (Using concrete models to add and subtract decimals)

Before students learn how to add and subtract decimals the traditional way, they need to be able to conceptually understand what it means to add and subtract decimals. After exposing them to this using place value blocks, I let them independently complete problems using food. (Who doesn’t learn with food?!) You can use any food that you find appropriate to use as ones (squares), tenths (rods) and hundredths (cubes).

I personally wanted to make sure that the food was proportional. (Ones need to be larger than tenths and hundredths.) I worked 2 problems with them to assist them in drawing pictures to model their work.

Students will complete the following worksheet to demonstrate understanding of CC.5.NBT.7.
